executive summary

The Basketball National League (BNL) is a national league held 3 months a year in South Africa. This league is a representation of the best male basketball players in the country, as it strives to be the best professional league on the African continent and its platform focuses on getting the youth of South Africa to strive to play professional basketball.

The league started off with 12 teams participating from the all 9 Provinces in South Africa. Each team is allowed 3 Foreign Nationals and 3 Players that do not reside in the origin of the team. Each player is paid a stipend for their participation in the league by their various teams.

Brief History of the Organization

BNL first started in 2013, by the then Minister of Sport Fikile Mbalula. This league is hosted at the home of basketball at Wembley Turffontein, Johannesburg.

The Executive Chairman of the BNL is Dr. Albert Mokoena, working together with the General Manager Dali Dzingwa. In 2013 the league started off with 12 Teams from all 9 provinces namely:

  1. Eastern Cape Province | Eastern Cape Windbreakers
  2. Free State Province | Free State Warriors
  3. Gauteng Province | Egoli Magic | Soweto Panthers | Tshwane Suns
  4. Kwazulu Natal Province | Duzi Royals | KwaZulu Marlins
  5. Limpopo Province | Limpopo Trailblazers currently Limpopo Pride
  6. Mpumalanga Province | Mpumalanga Wildcats currently Mpumalanga Rhinos
  7. Northern Cape | Northern Cape Diamonds currently Northern Cape Zebras
  8. North West | North West Eagles
  9. Western Cape | Western Cape Mountaineers
